  I hire cars regularly so I am familiar with "extras". The Ryanair contract states that "upon return of the car you will be refunded for the unused fuel and charged an admin fee of €30. This was not the case.

  I was charged €92 for a full tank and told there was no refund so "I should use as much fuel as possible". When I objected to this, I was told it would be waived if I took out their comprehensive insurance for €80. However, I was told that I needed to show 2 drivers licences to avail of this expensive insurance. As I was the only driver, I had no option but to agree to pay €92 or forfeit my advance payment.

  Great, brand new car. Be aware that your rental may have a restriction on daily kilometres. The car was limited to just 90km a day. We were told we could upgrade to unlimited for 24€, but wasn’t told that didn’t include IVA! So the hire price more than doubled when we paid the local fees. So, I will check the small print next time.

  By the way, I think Ryanair are fantastic. Michael O'Leary is my hero for championing low cost fares. I hope they will remove Firefly from their car hire partners.You have been warned!

  DO NOT USE Firefly at Alicante if you are a single driver travelling a short distance. Their additional charges are contrary to the Ryanair/Cartrawler contract and constitute serious malpractice.

  Never again, never again. They try to charge you for nothing and it is impossible to contact the company. I strongly recommend to choose another car hire company. They will charge your credit card without telling you. Shame on Firefly

  I think pretty much all the car hire companies are much of a muchness when it comes to a lot of the charging practices people complain about. Costs should probably be better explained in advance when booking online, especially through broker sites but do people really think these companies can provide hire cars for the headline prices which are often only 3 or 4 euros a day? I have used Firefly many times and for the last couple of years have taken out my own excess insurance policy in the uk so do not take out their insurance. This does make a big saving especially if you are a regular hirer. A previous reviewer said Firefly would not accept their own insurance but in fact they do not even care if you have your own insurance, the gotcha is that if you do not take their insurance then you must have a credit card with you with a sufficient free credit limit for them to block around €1200 until the car is returned. I’ve had a few cars with a fair few scratches when picked up but the damage summary has always shown any damage and I’ve personally had no issues with them trying to rip me off on damage claims and so far never had an issue. Overall quite happy with Firefly and will continue to use them - they often have some of the best prices especially when booked through broker sites.
